I think I was too ambitious in my alcohol to jello mix. It stayed all goopy.

Ah, yes, that would do it. The half and half mixture is already pretty strong; you can definitely taste the vodka! Also I think the first half of the liquid has to be virtually at boiling point for the stuff to jell and if you get alcohol to that heat you are losing some of its potency anyway!
