Yeah, I'm totally that way with cherries. I had dinner at my brother's and I wasn't terribly hungry and didn't eat much of dinner. But the cherries he bought for dessert? Yup. I was having a bad day at work, but bought a pound of cherries at a street vendor and ate the whole thing, felt so much better.

You are soooooo not alone.

Absolutely one of my favorite fruits as well. More of treat since they come only once a year.

The cherries have been great in the U.S. this year!

I can't stop on them once I start until I get that "ugggggh" feeling. Cherries are the devil. They're apparently also one of the oldest domesticated fruits.

Really, when you reach into a box of popsicles, which flavor are you hoping for? Grape? I don't think so. I know orange partisans, but Cherry is really where its at.

All - I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone! Perhaps I should start a chapter of Bing Addicts Anon.?

Barrett - I'm not sure, but I think that the flavor everyone looked for in popsicles or candies was always "red" or "purple". No actual relationship to any fruit, real or imagined, has ever been proven...

Meg--I have enjoyed reading your posts for a while now (today catching up on June reading I missed while on vacation). Your comments on cherries resonated with me. I adore them and eat no other fruit for the six weeks or so they're in season stateside.

My favs are Rainier cherries, which I first ate at Pike's Place market--out of the bag. But, I've got no truck with Bings, and one of my favorite sense memories includes eating them at the weekly market in St.-Jean-Pied-de-Port. I was pregnant with my oldest son, who learned to pit cherries in his mouth at 2.

OhMyGod! I can't believe there are others. Sometimes I have to stay home because I've eaten so many cherries that I get diarrhea. I LOVE cherries. I'll eat the entire two pounds, right there. And I'm like you, I know I should wash them, but I just start with one...thinking one cherry with 'stuff' on it will be ok, then I start to legitimize it by saying "it's probably just a little dirt, and dirt won't hurt anyone", then: "i'll just wipe each one as I eat them", and before you know it they're all gone. An office mate brought some organic ones from California and gave them to another officemate (not knowing of my addiction). He offered some to me. I ate all of them, and then had to go home. (He said he wasn't a fan of cherries, but I bought him a bag anyway...and guess what happened to the bag b/c he said he really didn't want any)

Thank you... I now know I am not alone, I too have issues with my cherry addiction... I actually searched the web for 'cherry addiction' only to find there are others and I am not a strange fruit who cannot control herself during cherry season, Hazy, I too have just munched my way through a colleagues bag of cherries, surely you would have thought that last nights fix of cherries would have been enough, obviously not. I am not fussy about the make of cherries. Admittedly some are much nicer than others but I have never met a cherry I didn't like (other than the squishy bruised ones).

Meg, I too will be occupying the seat next to you on the express route

Thank you all for confirming that I am not alone which means I can gorge until the belly ache appears on cherries without feeling I have a problem!

I, too, love bing cherries. And they only come once a year. Right now they are just right, plump, sweet. I was just looking online to see if they can cause diarhhea, because last night I had about 3/4 pound of them, and I had bad bloating and diarhhea all night and this morning. I was trying to pinpoint the cause.

One person here mentioned diarhhea. So I see that it is probably the cause. Anyone else have that problem?

Enjoy, everyone! But like Ben Franklin once said, take the moderate path. Words I need to abide by.

Barry

Personally, I have never suffered any problems with eating copious amounts of cherries but then I've always had a pretty strong constitution and the ability to eat anything and everything in sight. (Meg, the Goat!)

Today at work the office girl bought some bing cherries for a meeting. On the way home from work Ithought I'd stop at the same shop because they were soooo good. (There were leftovers - yay!). TWENTY EUROS for a little basket that wasn't even a kilo. Thank heavens I checked the price before plumping tow baskets in front of the till as I had intended!!

Every year at the same time I come down with a terrible stomach flu which I now acknowledge is actually "Cherry Flu". I'm terribly ill right now but just can't seem to stop. I'm probably eating 1 1/2 - 2 lbs a day (the Bing of course). I always justify my overconsumption by reasoning that it's probably good to attempt to get tired of them since the season is so short and one wouldn't want to spend the rest of the year pining for them.

Unfortunately (sorry for being disgusting!) I LOVE cherries but I've noticed that every time I have them I get diarrhea... I actually found this blog trying to research the reason for it! Yikes! By the by... I am considering moving to Dallas, is it a nice area to live? Specifically Frisco...

Thanks!

Desiree, I'm afraid that was about 16 years ago so I'm not much of an expert on Texas today. I loved the friends I lived with but hated everything else - cities with no downtowns, mega malls and very homophobic and closed-minded people in those days. It may have changed since then for all I know, but in 1990 it wasn't a fun place for this liberal-minded girl!

Having had terrible diarrhea two days in a row, I was wondering about the cherries I've been eating. Wow, am I glad I found this site --- now, at least I know if I eat them I'll be punished for being so greedy...but they ARE SO GOOD !

Has anyone eaten so many cherries that they got itchy eyes? Never had this problem--ate a whole bag of cherries last night...just wondering..

I completely and totally know what you mean I am so obsessive about cherries that I actually broke up with a really nice guy because he ate all my cherries I know its seems stupid.

I see I am not the only one suffering from diahrea after eating cherries. So I did some research on the net and found out that Cherry farms use AZM (Azinphos-methyl is a dangerous neurotoxin derived from nerve agents used during World War II) as a pesticide to kill any insects on cherries.... It is more dangerious than I thought to eat uwashed Cherries... check this site out for the Wikepedia definition of what AZM does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azinphos-methyl.. Cheers and stay healthy!! Seb

I've always known that cherries do the diarrhea number on me. But i am absolutely crazy about Bing cherries and am in heaven when I am eating them. I bought 2-1/2 pounds at $5.99 per pound last night and ate all of them while I watched Olympic coverage ,. There was not one bad one in the lot. They were perfect. BUT I already knew I could not leave the house today. It is the big D big time. However my weight plummeted three pounds to 118 which makes me feel good and I remind myself that this cleans out the system and cherries have so many good things health wise. I would like to be able to eat maybe ten and stop. But I cannot. I LOVE Bing cherries.

I couldn't figure out what happened to my normally predictable digestive system at 3 a.m. two nights ago, and 4 a.m. last night. Then I remembered all the cherries I had eaten! Still, I LOVE them, and like the others on here, if it's cherry season, I'm out there buying them daily (at any price), and eating two huge bowls a day. I was reading today that it's the sorbitol in them that does a number on the stomach, but it also can cause weight loss, and I've noticed with me that it does. I'm not giving them up, just being careful WHEN I eat them!

Only a kilo? During the cherry season, I'll buy them in bulk in boxes of about 4kg. They don't last more than a couple of days. If it's not cherry season though, I usually avoid them. The out of season cherries tend to be small, tart, and disastrous to the digestive system.

Nature's candy.

Many of these posts are years old, but I'm glad I found it! Like so many of you, I'm a cherry-holic. I only eat them when they're in season (and relatively cheap), because I eat so many, it would break the bank, otherwise! But I can easily go thru' 3-5 lbs a day.

But also like many of you, when I get carried away, they make me pay! The stomach rumbles, gas (my daughters & husband LOVE that!), and the big D! And that why I found this site, too, trying to find out what it was in cherries that causes this reaction in me.

But I figure it's like a natural purge & since I only get about a week of them a year, it won't kill me (maybe my husband & daughters, but not me! :) But I don't like cherry-flavored anything else...just fresh cherries!

Cherry and Pomegranate seasons are to live for...I see I'm in good company. Getting the 'toots' seems par for the course when more than 15 Bing cherries are consumed in one sitting...There is a produce stand directly across from my apartment complex...I get excercise walking over there to pick the best of the Bings!

I really feel comforted by all the comments in this blog...thanks for being so open some of you.

This is great!! I thought I was the only crazy who can eat 1-2 pounds of cherries almost every day in late June-July, knowing I'm gonna pay horrific consequences later but not caring. They were on sale and a pool-mate asked me to pick some up for her. I bought her a pound, bought myself 2 pounds. I ate my cherries, eyed hers. Needless to say, I have to go back to the store tomorrow to pick up more cherries for her.... and for me.

I budget at least $50 for cherries, especially Rainers, every summer. Eating huge quantities. No diarheaa, but they do cure sluggishness. Once I bought a big bag of cherries from a street vendor in Hong Kong to take on a ferry, thinking I better wait until I got off the ferry to wash and eat them. They didn't last the trip; it was so hot and they were so tasty. Spitting the seeds overboard was great. I had NO problem. Life in a bowl!

OMG!!! i am so happy right now. i was actually googling "cherry overdose". i LOVE cherries. in a pinch...during off season, i'll eat frozen cherries. but it's just not the same. during cherry season, i'm a maniac. and the past couple of weeks, they've been on sale for 1.77 a pound. of course, i stocked up and i've been eating at least a pound a day. i can literally just sit and eat them...and it's like i go into another dimension...where there is only me...and the cherries...i have my large bowl of cherries to my right, and my pit bowl to the left...and it's like a smoothly run little factory...hee. i have the digestive issue, too...but i always thought of it as nature's way of detoxing me :)
anyway...thank you all for commenting me here..it is so wonderful to know i am not alone.

It's great to hear from so many likewise cherry lovers who braved the stomach pains. I have no resistence to cherries. As long as they are near me, they dissapear in seconds. This week I bought 3 packages of bing cherries (3 lb each) from Costco. How I am suffering now... This is my 3rd day, with about 1 lb left at my frig. Now I know the true meaning of cherry indulgence ;)

Unfortunately, I never knew cherries were so .. painful on the stomach!
But I love 'em too.

LOVE cherries! I just ate nearly 2lbs of them in ONE sitting and was googling hoping I wasn't the only freak out there who did this! Started worrying that something terrible would happen to me, ha ha! Oh, they're SO GOOD!!!! SO crisp and juicy!!! I can't resist them. I'm glad I don't have any more because I'm certain I would eat yet another 2lbs in another sitting. That's overdose!!!!!!

I had no idea there were others!! I thought I was crzy and all alone! I will eat cherries until I'm sick and can't eat another bite. Once while travelling on summer vacation, my husband and I had to pull over because I'd eaten so many cherries, I felt like I was having a cherry "hangover".

What a riot to find so many cherry addicts! I started with Rainers this spring and have ended the cherry season here in the Northwest with a new French variety called, "Lapin." It was developed from the Bing and is larger, & more juicy, if possible. And in our area, it is only one dollar a pound! I have spent over $80 so far, on cherries this season. I can hardly wait for next spring.

i am laughing my head off. i, too, go crazy during cherry season. I can eat a pound a nite. they give me gas, bloating and diarrhea but i don't care. i know that in a week or so, the season is over. so, life is short, eat some cherries

I feel sooo much better now. I just polished off an entire 2 lbs of cherries (both regular and Bing) and I thought I might not make it through the night. I did not know what got into me... I couldn't stop! two and three at a time. One after the other without a single pause for more than three or four seconds. Sheeesh! Good times!!!

Wow, you guys are hilarious, lol. I had to google cherry benefits to health since I too have an addiction and thought I was alone. For the past two weeks I swear each day I go to the grocery store and pick up a bag of about 2 lbs or little over especially since they have been on sale for 1.49 a pound, so each day I'm back in line buying them, once I get in my car, I start stuffing them down my throat, not even washing them, yesterday I came home and realized there were cherry stems throughout my condo on the carpet, maybe they fell from the bag since I eat them directly out of the bag, spit the seeds inside the bag along with the stems, so I was walking around picking up cherry stems. I had a friend visit me the other day and had my bag of cherries I had just bought on my kitchen counter and wanted to hide them so he did not get his paws on not a one, but he saw them and only ate three thank goodness. I will eat about 2 lbs or more in one sitting, stuffing them in my mouth sometimes two at a time like there is no tomorrow, until I'm bloated and gassy. I had to google that also to see why cherries cause gas. Reading all of your posts makes me laugh and now I know there must really be something to these bing cherries. I don't even like cherry pie, I hate the mushy cherries in the pies or the cherries on top of cheesecake, but eating the bing cherries raw, I could probably be in a cherry eating contest. Sometimes I'm afraid I will chip my teeth from eating them so fast that I bite into the big ole seed. Anyway, I just had to post my love of cherries to everyone. I just don't know if eating that many cherries in one day will cause me to gain weight. I googled that before and could not come up with the answer. I thought I had a love and addiction for red grapes, the crunchy ones, but Cherries has topped that. When they go back up in price, I will stop buying them.

The mere sight of those sweet flavorful lil orbs induce a pavlovian response in me, i get anxious, i start salivating, and become extremely possessive over them. I go to the store everyday and buy strawberries, blueberries, and of course cherries then straight home and immediately indulge!
5'3 99lbs but i can eat 2 lbs a day! Why can't every season be cherry season:)

Boy last night I had the worst diarrhea and was afraid I'd come down with something bad. Boy was I relieved that it was likely caused by the cherries I ate. I'm not normally a cherry eater so it caught me off guard. But no other symptoms and it seems to be fine after about an hour of toilet visits lol. One question: are your cherry shits black? I don't mean to be graphic but just want to make sure. Boy was my stool dark dark dark.

Anyhow, love cherries, and after a day or two of making sure this was just the cherries talkin to me, I will finish off the bag and get myself another :).

Found this by trying to find out if cherries cause stomach aches. I had a half pound for lunch at work and now have a nice stomach ache developing. It was interesting finding this site and seeing there are others out there like myself, who can't control themselves around cherries. I love them and will eat too many even though I get the stomach ache and the trots to punish me for overindulging. They're only available once a year and I can't resist gorging. My favorite.

I just shit my pants on the way home from Wegman's tonite. I guess the lb. of huge dark delicious cherries I had this afternoon were more like gaseous cherry bombs!!! But they were soooo good!!!!!!!!

I can't stop eating bing cherries! Over the past 5 days I probably ate 4 pounds! Do they make you fat? I guess better than chips!

I, too, am a Cherryholic. I, too, get super bloated & major diaherra everytime I stuffed myself with the delicious Bing. I hope it doesn't have any bacteria causing permanent damage as I simply can't stop.

I'm so glad to see that there are other cherry addicts out there. It makes me feel a bit less weird. I probably ate about 3 pounds of cherries yesterday and I'll eat another couple pounds today. I don't get stomach aches; the worst thing that happens to me is a bit of flatulence. Cherry addicts of the world unite!

I am a huge cherrie lover every time i go to the store i buy another bag!! But my husband sometimes has to sleep on the couch because cherries make me stink really bad, i have the absolute worst gas when i eat cherries. And for some reason whenever i go to target i have to rush home and take a toilet filling shit! I'm glad theres other people out there who love cherries as much as me even though the side affects can be disturbing!!

Oh my goodness....I am SO bloated, and now I know why! I ate 3 pounds of fresh Rainier cherries in about an hour today. Had to google to find out if cherries could be the culprit. They were better than Godiva truffles, but I'm really paying for it now!!

Just ate over 2 pounds and wondering why I'm so bloated but after reading the posts, I know why! I love cherries also and I can eat them like a machine. Grapes, blackberries and raspeberries too. It could be worse: at least their not brownies

OMG, I'm crying. You guys are hysterical, and I thank you! My dad told me last year to never trust a fart. He's the most distinguished person I know, but he's not the youngest at this point, and it made the whole family laugh for a week. This morning, I had a customer on site, and while he was watching trials, I was in my office eating cherries and catching up on email. I really do bring them home and rinse them first!!

But an hour later, my stomach was rumbling, and it was off to the races. I was trying not to give myself up as I ran out of the luncheon every 5-10 minutes to "return a customer call". I had such bad gas, but all i could think of was my dad saying -"never trust a fart". I've never struggled so hard to keep a straight face in a client meeting.

So is it the fruit that does it, or am I not rinsing them properly? any thoughts are appreciated while cherry season is in full swing!

Gave up alcohol and cig's now on to Bing Cherries. Do they work in low carb diet? Darn, that's why I am not losing weight. Cherry on!

Hi. My name is Nan, and I'm a cherryholic.

I am laughing, my dog is looking at me as if I've lost my mind. I'm the same as the rest of you guys, love cherries. Always have. Really love to get the 3# box at Costco (from OR). I could eat the whole thing in one sitting, but make it last 2 days. I tell you, they are all great, no rotten ones, no little bruises--3#. It's heavenly.
Don't have the diarrhea, but the gas is explosive and almost frightening.
So glad to know we're all in this together--but not together together as we'd probably not be good at sharing! Cherry on, yourself.

HEY GUYS, IT'S CHERRY SEASON!!!!!!! Just like most of you, I cannot avoid buying & eating cherries when in season (it's so short :(. But I'm also one of those who gets the digestive issues (gas, bloating, D), which is really bizarre to me, because I have a very tough system, having travelled a lot. The only other veg/fruit that gives me similar gas, but not the rest, is artichokes. Maybe I have some sort of low tolerance to something with cherries. I don't like cherry-flavored anything really. Just the real fresh thing! I'll try washing them more, but like many of you, I can't keep my hand out of the bag in my shopping cart or car on the way home. Hey, maybe it's nature's perfect colon cleanse. Cherry power!

my stomach now hurts from laughing AND eating too many cherries. they were $1.88/pound this week and i've eaten them for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. i even packed a bag of them for a 45 minute drive today. it reminded me of when i was a smoker, always toting a pack around with me. but they're PERFECT - crisp, juicy, sweet, and no bruises!! i have to make sure there's a bathroom nearby when i have them, but i just don't care.

I am a 57 yr old bing addict and yes I just ate 1 1/2 pounds and spent a couple hours going to the can. I'll probably get some more tomorrow.

cherries are excellent for joint pain!! that's why the settlers planted so many cherry trees when they came here.. they are low in calories, plump with water and nutrition and a magic acid that protects the joints.. SO EAT UP CHERRY LOVERS!

Cherry lover extaordinaire ...ditto on the all of the above, but this year I overdid it for a sustained time and experienced similar symptoms to allergies, so I googled "cherry allergy." My throat got constricted and I experienced other respiratory complications - more than I bargained for - anybody else ever have that or know what might be cherries to cause this? Maybe it's the because they are the non-organic variety - what gets in those? I guess, too much of anything... : - )

Regarding the allergic reaction, I wonder if you are reacting to the product(s) used to clean the cherries, rather than the cherries themselves? My husband has had a similar reaction to cherries on one occasion and a much more extreme one later eating salad. Most of the time he is not allergic to cherries or lettuce. His doctor told him that these days a lot of produce is washed in bleach (yeah, ick) and that he's probably allergic to the bleach. So try washing them really well and see if that does the trick. It has for my husband - the only reaction he's had since was at a big catered dinner (as in 2000+ invitees) and we suspect that the salad again was treated with bleach - probably, ironically, out of food safety concerns.
